Rainbow Drive-In Plate Lunch Binge

For the past few months, I don’t know why it is, but I’ve had this continued craving for a good ‘ole Hawaii style plate lunch. You know da’ rules: main entree with 2 scoops rice and 1 scoop mac. Where the most convenient place for me near where I live is none other than Rainbow Drive-In.

What I admire about Rainbow Drive-In is they stick to the classic local style drive in format. From the way the place is designed, being truly a “Drive-In” (not some hole-in-the-wall), to the ambiance while eating there with fellow locals, either on lunch break from work, or hitting Rainbow’s after a sunny beach day of sun ‘n surf. On top of that, they still serve their plate lunches the old school way on a round plate packed in a square cardboard box with wax paper liner. Love that! For some reason I think a plate lunch just tastes better when packed that way.

On top of all that, their prices are incredibly reasonable, especially considering how close they are to Waikiki. Most regular plate lunches go for about $7 to $8; far below the market price nowadays, where most plate lunch joints are charging $10 and up.

If Rainbow Drive-In doesn’t have something you like, hit Hawaii’s Favorite Kitchens next door on the same property, their sister “food court”. Hawaii’s Favorite Kitchens is comprised of Poke Stop, Mikes Huli Chicken, KC Drive Inn (Waffle Dog!), Shimazu Shave Ice and Hawaii Nostalgia Studio.

I once ripped Rainbow’s about the “brown gravy” for their popular Loco Moco, but I overcame that. It’s fine with me now. Not nearly as great as the Loco Moco at Liliha Bakery, but it works. Their beef stew, curry stew and chopped steak are all on point and great deals on their daily specials days they’re available. Yet my fave of all is their Pork Long Rice. Think Chicken Long Rice, da ‘kine you get with Hawaiian Food, and exchange the chicken for pork, along with sauteed celery and green onions. So ono! Broke da’ mout! And only $7.25 Mondays and Fridays.

What I like about Rainbow is the option of ordering their signature BBQ steak rare. I Like mine rare and because the cut is thin it comes out medium rare sometimes. For me rare is the way to go. They use good cuts of meat and it’s so much softer. Most places overcook their teriyaki.
Also since I now have to drive from Kam Heights we are having our Rainbow drive in soon here in Kalihi………
