2016 Waikiki SPAM JAM

Presenting photo coverage of the 2016 Waikiki SPAM JAM. An always EPIC block party event that took place Saturday, April 30, 2016, spanning a HUGE crowd on Kalakaua Avenue, starting from Lewers Street, on up as far as Kaiulani, where the Hyatt Waikiki is.

The entertainment was outstanding, as was  da’ SPAM ‘kine grindz.

Enjoy. :-)

As you may have noticed already, there was a smudge on my Canon PowerShot S100’s rather tiny lens, hence the blur on one side of many of these shots. I didn’t notice it on-screen while out in the field. Oh well. Shots still turned out decent enough for publishing.

Hard Rock Cafe Waikiki’s SPAM Poke (you know SOMEONE’s bound to do that)

“Um yes, I’ll have 1/4-pound of Wasabi Shoyu Tako Poke, 1/2-pound of Limu Kohu Ahi Poke, extra Inamona please, and a 10-pound bucket of SPAM Poke. Majaloz”. LOlL!!!

This GORGEOUS Colllie has nothing to do with the SPAM JAM. She just happened to be walking down the sidewalk with her mom on Kalakaua Avenue while I was on my way to the event. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

I think the world needs a Spam canned sausage. Vienna has never tasted the same since they started using chicken.

Pat, at one time there was SPAM Hot Dogs. I tried it, and it was pretty lame, being it too mushy (like TREET), with no snappy casing, nor casing at all for that matter. Didn’t taste like SPAM at all. No wonder it didn’t last very long on the market (about a year or less in stores, IIRC).

What I miss with the original SPAM is the “mystery goo” that used to coat the slab within the can. When you emptied the SPAM out, it would make this funky flatulent noise, thanks to that “mystery goo”. lol

Jus’ thinking… howcum nobody has tried to make fo’ real Spam Jam? Wonder if it would be something like a teri-sweetened spam puree would work? Maybe it would be too much like that Red Devil Potted Meat or Ham Spread? Maybe you can start some kinda challenge to the readers!

Well I’ll be dang, you’re right! NEVER ever seen literally “SPAM Jam”. Ever! Genius!

What if instead of trying to make “SPAM Jam” taste like SPAM, make it a Jam that would compliment the SPAM.

Similar to your idea, sans the SPAM puree, yet being it’s a “Jam”, they’d all have to have some sort of crushed fruit in it:

          • Teriyaki Pineapple SPAM JAM
          • Misoyaki Guava SPAM JAM
          • Ginger-Garlic Kiwi SPAM JAM
          • Pineapple Maple ‘n Cloves SPAM JAM
          • Guava ‘n Cloves SPAM JAM
          • Hawaiian Chili Pepper SPAM JAM

You could use these SPAM JAM flavors as a glaze for baking SPAM, to glaze sliced SPAM for musubi, or other creative cooking applications with SPAM.

Which brings to mind, we can’t have a product line of SPAM JAM without SPAM JELLY. ;-)

          • May 10, 2016 at 5:25 am

I always thought that “SPAM Jelly” was that stuff that the SPAM was packed in! (Though not so much anymore)

Love your spin on the jam! Some other flavors: Cinnamon-Applesauce SPAM jam, Pineapple honey-mustard SPAM Jam, Korean Asian Pear BBQ SPAM Jam, Mango Chutney-Curry SPAM Jam, Grated Daikon-Ponzu SPAM Jam.  Can we get a copyright/patent?

And of course, Asian Pear Tonkatsu Spam Jam!!!

Reminds me of a haiku by Michael Lubic:

        Pink tender morsel
        Glistening with salty gel
        What the hell is it?

In Pittsburgh, there’s a sandwich made with “Chipped Ham” (thinly sliced ham loaf)… Thought I’d try to duplicate it using Spam. Will let you know my results.

        • May 11, 2016 at 4:09 am

Fantastic add to the list of “SPAM JAM” flavors. I especially like the Asian Pear idea, which you obviously know is one of the secrets to GREAT Tonkatsu Sauce! The Mango Chutney-Curry SPAM JAM flavor sounds winnahz as well! Which has me wondering how a SPAM Curry flavor would taste? Hmmm? I think it would probably be too overpowering, along with the SPAM flavor itself getting lost. I’m talking about if Hormel were to try and incorporate the flavor right into the canned SPAM itself.

Since we’re talking canned meats again (always an intriguing subject), I recently discovered Don Quijote Kaheka is now carrying SITA (think Lamb flavored SPAM) and Corned Mutton (think Lamb flavored corned beef).

Best taste: likely Spam and Macaroni and cheese with tomato based dip, tie with the old Spam and noodles.

Best Presentation: Spam and Ahi Katsu.

Some obvious stuff missed. You know like the fried Spam and fried egg sandwich on white with mayo and lettuce can still  be good on a Saturday scrounge around the house. Gotta cut the bread in triangle for the fancy effect.
