Kenny’s… in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki’hee

Yeah, yeah, that was totally corny as ever, and didn’t roll over the tongue well at all. Yet hey, of course that was an ode to “Kenny’s… in the Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi’eee”, whom we all can NEVER forget!

That said, here’s one last hurrah to Kenny’s, this time at their second “Express Hawaiian Barbecue” location at the food court in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki. Where since opening in 2008, Kenny’s Hawaiian Barbecue closed their doors for good this past Saturday, July 4, 2015, just one day earlier than their iconic flagship restaurant in Kalihi.

While hanging out there at Kenny’s on their last day at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki this past Saturday, I ended up talking story with this really cool Nihongin couple…

…both of whom were quite eager to show off their Kenny’s Laulau with me…

Nan de? Oishii. She go!

Seriously, in essence, true local style food, done pretty much on point. The Loco Moco gravy was rich and savory, while the hamburger patty was moist, yet crisp on the edges. Rice cooked perfect. Mac Salad, in it to win it.

Kenny’s Hawaiian Plate was also rockin’ Waikiki their final night. Da Kalua Pig was smokey enough, moist enough, and seasoned with just the right amount of Hawaiian Salt. While the pork Laulau was also flavorful, moist, ‘n tender. Da’ Lomi Salmon could have used more salted salmon, yet FWIW, totally worked. Overall, no comparison to Highway Inn or Helena’s, yet FWIW, again, SHE GO!!!

And a great way to say Aloha ‘Oe to Kenny’s Express Hawaiian Barbecue in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki… just a day before the final day of “Kenny’s… in the Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi’eee”.

I was so bummed when I walked over. Was across the street from my condo and the only such place within easy walking distance when I am on Oahu. So in the car to the Poi Bowl at Ala Moana, where the ladies (yup. The same ones forever) always treat me right.

      Pat,

Poi Bowl at Ala Moana? You mean in the food court? You know, I always had trepidation about that place. Yet now that you suggested them, I’m SO going to try them, thanks to you!

I have been eating there since they were a small sit down next to Lynn’s Deli. About 1968 I would guess.
