Hawaii State Andagi Day

According to NationalDayCalendar.com, today, June 5th, 2015, the first Friday of the month is National Doughnut Day:

Each year on the first Friday in June, people happily celebrate National Doughnut or Donut Day.  This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army “Lassies”, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army.  It was during WWI that the Salvation Army “lassies” were sent to the front lines of Europe.  Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers.  American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys”.  A more common spelling is Donut.

On this day, many doughnut stores in the United States offer free doughnuts to their customers.

Celebrate the day by enjoying your favorite doughnut.  Use #NationalDonutDay or #NationalDoughnutDay when using social media.

National Doughnut Day, an “unofficial” National holiday was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I.    This day began as a fund-raiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army.  The goal of their 1938 fund-raiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression.”

While the Portuguese Malasada may be the first to come to mind as the “Hawaiian Doughnut” to designate a state day for, “Malasada Day” has already been claimed by Leonard’s Bakery to fall on the day before Ash Wednesday, known as “Fat Tuesday” or “Shrove Tuesday”.

That said, we still  have the Portuguese Malasada’s Okinawan “brother from another mother”, the Andagi!

Therefore, The Tasty Island Honolulu Food Blog hereby proclaims the first Friday of June, which today is June 5, 2015, Hawaii State Andagi Day. Yay!

I’d say, yeah, definitely a good “excuse” for an extra trip back home! Just make sure you can afford to fly back again on Labor Day weekend in September for the Okinawan Festival!

I was actually going to name today Hawaii State Kamehameha Bakery Poi Donut Day, however, I decided to save that one for Kamehameha Day. Particularly because Kamehameha Bakery got their name from their original location on School Street, which was right across the street from the Kamehameha School bus terminal.
