Hawaii State Ice Cake Day

Hawaii style Li Hing Mui “Ice Cake”

According to NationalDayCalendar.com, today, June 1st is National Hazelnut Cake Day. Which by all means is a delicious cake worth celebrating. I LOVE Hazelnut!!

In light of that, as we now “officially” have Hawaii State Portuguese Sausage Manapua Day, The Tasty Island Honolulu Food Blog hereby proclaims today, June 1st, Hawaii State Ice Cake Day. Yay!

Which I bet lots of you old school local folks are thinking, “Dang, I never made or had  Ice Cake in AGES!”

Remember that? Yup, Malolo syrup — my “Hanabaddah Dayz” fave’ was always Fruit Punch ‘n  Orange — mixed with water and canned cream, while some folks also add Li Hing Mui, and/or odda’ kine stuffs, laddat. Freeze da’ buggah in paper cups until ice-hard, then pop ’em out and flip ’em ovah back into the cup and lick away.

Ice Cake is just as good as Shave Ice on a hot Hawaiian day! And perfect timing for this first day of June, just three weeks ahead of the official launch of Summer on June 21st.

    Okay, so, talking about hanabaddah dayz (I know this of topic, but), what was the name of the Drive-in on the corner of Likelike and Kamehameha Highway?  I asked my mom, but she doesn’t remember, dangit!

      Auntie Doni,

      That would be Windy’s Drive Inn, which has long since been replaced by Burger King.
