Big T’s Shrimp Truck

Hold on a minute. We can’t start this special review without THE requisite intro’…

That said (and hopefully you watched while tapping your fingers to the catchy beat), if you’re a Hawaii Five-0 reboot fan, you probably recognize that man’s face. Yes, that’s Taylor “Big T” Wily, known on the show as “Kamekona”, who recently started a real-life Shrimp Truck business. How cool is that?! Ah yes, life imitating art at its finest.

Getting into some background here, “Kamekona” has a role in the new Hawaii Five-0 CBS TV series as a “stereotypical” local boy, who acts as an informant to Five-0 police commander Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Laughlin) and his trusty yet “issue-ridden” partner, HPD detective “Danno” (Scott Caan). All the while ever expanding his entrepreneurial endeavors, going from a small shave ice cart at Waikiki beach, to now running a helicopter tour company, which as he says, “Hint: Hawaii’s biggest industry isn’t shrimp”. lol

In real life, Taylor “Big T” Wily is a supah cool braddah, just like how he appears on the show.

Big T’s Shrimp Truck opened about two months ago in front of Hilo Hattie on Nimitz Highway. FYI, Hilo Hattie is a store that specializes in Aloha wear and various other made in Hawaii products. Which makes it a good fit for Big T’s Shrimp Truck, as lots of tourists from the mainland who watch Hawaii Five-0 regularly visit this store, and once they see the massive image of “Kamekona” and tag lines “Shrimp Truck, Shave Ice & Aloha” emblazoned on the side of this lunch truck, they go nuts!

Getting right to it, let’s check out Big T’s Shrimp Truck menu…

The man in the truck’s kitchen is Chef Wil, who upon talking with, sounds absolutely passionate about every single shrimp plate that gets served. And naturally, he wants to expand the menu beyond garlic shrimp and rice, with simple, yet enticing ideas such as shrimp chowder in a bread bowl and more. Sounds great! I told him to have King’s Bakery make Portuguese Sweet Bread soup bowls with Big T’s face embossed on the top, which I think would look super cool, and would totally sell the “Big T” brand in an edible way!

Let’s check out some of the shrimp plates, starting with Big T’s Butter & Garlic regular plate…

Big T’s Butter & Garlic Shrimp Plate (regular). $12

The sauteed butter ‘n garlic shrimp are farm raised on Kauai (Costco sells them), while underneath that is a generous portion of cole slaw, 2 scoops rice and a local orange slice.

Big T’s Butter & Garlic Shrimp Plate (mini). $9

Big T’s Shrimp Scampi plate. $12.

Oh, yeah, that Shrimp Scampi’s got my name all over it, which is what I ordered…

Big T’s Shrimp Scampi plate (Pomai’s). $ – comp’d by braddah Taylor… woot-woot! —>>>>

Let’s try da’ Scampi…

Brah. Whoah Brah. Cuz’n braddah. Braddah Cuz. Whoah bully, MEAN! Mean, da’ Shrimp Scampi, bull, MEAN!

Seriously, WOW! That Scampi sauce is to DIE FOR! Braddah Wil, you nailed this! Chef Wil said his Shrimp Scampi sauce is the basic formulation of butter, white wine, garlic and Parmesan Cheese, plus of course a dash here and there of his “secret ingrediments”. Dude, I could like just as well pour this Scampi sauce into my bathtub and soak in it, it’s THAT ONO!

Let’s try da’ Cole Slaw…

Perfect, pretty much back-to-basics ‘Slaw, with the cabbage and carrots cut just right, having a nice balance of mayo’, vinegar and sugar (or whatever Chef Wil uses to that formula), along with the ever-important dash of fresh-cracked black.

Plus he drizzles the remnants of that prepared-to-order, AMAZING Shrimp Scampi sauce on da’ scoops of perfectly cooked white rice as well. Pro, baby, pro!

$12 may seem a bit steep for a daily plate lunch, however that’s the going rate at most shrimp trucks on the North Shore of Oahu, where the genre earned its popularity. Plus, keep in mind Kauai shrimp aren’t exactly cheap, running about $10/pound in Costco. And oh, I forgot to say, them Kauai shrimp are SU-weet! Oh man are they sweet, and so tender and flavorful. I swear, we’re so lucky in Hawaii to have such great locally-farmed seafood such as Kauai Shrimp, amongst more.

Taylor “Big T” Wily, a.k.a. “Kamekona” on Hawaii Five-0, with Pomai, a.k.a. “Robert McGarrett”, the NEW Hawaii Five-0 star! Hey, one can dream, right? lol 2.25.14.

Getting back to the man of my dreams (LOL!), along with his Hawaii Five-0 show’s famous Shave Ice, Big T’s Shrimp Truck also sells “Big T-Shirts” in various designs. Here’s the entire selection…

Summing it up, Big T’s Shrimp Truck puts out Shrimp plates as good if not better than those on the North Shore, all the while being conveniently located near downtown Honolulu. And you may be able to meet Taylor “Big T” Wily, a.k.a. Hawaii Five-O’s “Kemokona” at his new lunch truck, as he visits it at least once or twice a week to check-up. And don’t be shy about saying hello to him, as he’s a supah’ cool, down-to-earth “Eh, howzit” kinda’ guy. Oh, and yes, the truck sells “Kamekona style” Shave Ice, too.

Pomai, he know how to market himself and the time is now with a hit show to help make it good.
That shrimp is sure to die for and great pictures of all the dishes too.

I just thought of an idea for Big T’s Shrimp Truck:

      Saimin Shrimp Scampi

Instead of serving the Shrimp Scampi with rice (local style), do an even more local fusion version of the classic Scampi on Pasta noodles, instead with fried (or just boiled and oyster sauce-seasoned) Saimin Noodles!

For good measure, add slivers of Kamaboko in the saute pan with the shrimp, plus perhaps SPAM or ham for the carnivores out there. Finish the Saimin Shrimp Scampi plate/bowl with a generous helping of green onion for garnish. I also have a “secret ingrediment” idea for the Saimin Scampi sauce. ;-I

Big T’s Saimin Shrimp Scampi for the win, baby!

P.S. Remember, you heard the concept of “Saimin Shrimp Scampi” here on the Tasty Island first. 3.02.14 @ 6:30pm. ;-)

Pomai, your taste and ideals are great. I still love mac salad

  • March 3, 2014 at 5:33 am

Pomai- You look a little Starstruck…LOL. Those shrimp must smell delirious. Here’s a guy who knows how to market himself, yet not let the fame go to his head.

@ Dean-San – What’s funny is, Taylor said to me several times, “Brah, you look familiar!”, asking if I was in the entertainment industry. I finally told him the best I can think of is either my blog, or try Google image “Andre Agassi”. ;-)

But yes, he’s very humble and down-to-earth. When Big T is there at the truck, he hangs out longer than necessary just to meet the fans that come off the tour buses. If he had the time to spend a few hours during lunch hour each day at that truck, it would be doing like CRAZY business. However he can’t, because Hawaii Five-0 is shooting right now, so he’s busy with that.

@ Kelike – Nah, I think Mac Salad would be too heavy to go along with the already-rich butter-coated shrimp. The Cole Slaw matched perfectly.

Pomai, Italians already serve shrimp scampi over spaghetti and pasta which is like serving the scampi over saimin noodles.

  • March 3, 2014 at 6:16 pm

ANDRE AGASSI?????……didn’t you really mean Brad Pitt?

I almost choked on my scampi;)

  • March 3, 2014 at 7:53 pm

@ Michele – Nah, the only celebrity most people ever comment (which I’ve heard frequently throughout my adult years) who I resemble is Agassi. NEVER got Brad Pitt. He’s way too blonde/Nordic-looking (my 1/2 Portuguese blood overrides them all). More specifically obvious, Brad still has all his hair (above his eyebrows). lol

@ Ken-San – Yep, that’s where the Saimin (noodle) Scampi idea came from.

  • March 4, 2014 at 2:26 am

I’ve never had saimin, but in my opinion, the best improvement on regular shrimp scampi is over mashed potatoes. Could be served as a last meal (and with all that butter, cream and cholesterol, it certainly could be someone’s unintentional last meal!!). I wonder how mushroom scampi would work out. I’m going to give that a try, maybe with eryngi mushrooms, next time I’m feeling naughty. Won’t be anytime soon, I’ve been on a super clean eating kick.

  • March 21, 2014 at 12:26 pm

I had the shrimp scampi today and my regular plate didn’t have the coleslaw. I don’t think $13 is worth for 8 pieces of shrimp and 2 scoop rice.

hi heading to Honolulu next week from Australia, where will Big Ts shrimp truck be located ?

    • May 4, 2015 at 6:03 am

      Aloha David,

Last time I spoke to Taylor’s business partner Les Kekahuna (back in October 2014), Big T’s truck was operating on a part-time basis out in the Laie area on the North Shore of Oahu (nearby where the Polynesian Cultural Center is). So kinda’ “iffy”. Even if Big T’s shrimp truck isn’t there, there are a bunch of other popular shrimp trucks out that side of the island at any given time, including the famous Giovanni’s.
