Pizza Hut's "Big Eat Pizza" Deal

The “Pizza Wars” are alive and well as the “big three” battle for our hard earned dollars, coming to the point where who knows, one day soon we may be able to get a large one-topping pie for just a buck!

Case in point where Pizza Hut locations around Hawaii are now offering “any pizza” for $10, or one medium “Big Eat Pizza” for just $5, carryout price. That’s a “big eat” deal indeed!

A 12″ medium pizza can adequately feed two adults, so that was the perfect solution for me and my girlfriend to have a quick, cheap, easy, and most importantly DELICIOUS meal the other night. This from Pizza Hut’s Old Stadium Mall location.

I don’t eat pizza that often, but when it comes to pie from the “Big Three” — Papa John’s, Domino’s and Pizza Hut — my favorite has always been Pizza Hut.

As always, it all comes down to the crust and the sauce, who in my humble opinion, as for the US chains, Pizza Hut’s da’ numbah’ one, no ka oi, ichiban best! OK, I said it. Start throwing dough, sauce or whatever’s else in the kitchen at me, I don’t care. That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it!

So here we have a Pizza Hut 12″ diameter medium pan pizza that includes cheese and pepperoni, while I also requested mushrooms as an extra topping for $1.75 more, which turned my $5 “Big Eat Pizza”  into a $7.07 “B.E.P” (not the band)  including tax. Still a sweet deal.

Let’s pop it open and check it out…

All that for just $5 bucks? Super! Except for one thing: the mushrooms. What the heck is that, CRUMBS? Most of the ‘shrooms’ on there are tiny pieces of chopped-up STEMS! STEMS! Wassup wit’ dat?! Hey man, I know the customers are getting this pie for a SONG, but when it comes to extra toppings that we’re paying FULL PRICE for, you better give us our money’s worth! Seriously!

And they really stepped on the wrong person’s foot on this one, because I for one LOVE mushrooms, and when you skimp me on that, I’m MAD. Real MAD.

It’s not so much the quantity of mushrooms I have a problem with, but that they’re putting tiny pieces of chopped-up stems on it, which has ZERO eye appeal. Is it so hard to thinly slice a mushroom right down the entire body with stem and cap all attached? Common’ I do that at home all the time! So anyway, end of rant, but just SAYING. Ehem!

For the “slice shot”, I chose one that had actually had a descent amount of mushroom cap slices on it…

Are you also noticing what I’m noticing? The crust. Look how thin the crust is!…

3/16″ thickness to be exact. I measured it. Ha ha. The entire pie was also exactly 12″ in diameter, as advertised, so they’re not skimping on that dimension, just the amount of dough their handing out to make the crust. He man, you want more dough? Pay more dough! lol

Despite a thinner than usual crust, it still had that wonderfully toasty ‘n tasty bottom (I think I’ve told someone that before)…

Let’s have a bite (or two or three)…

Om-nom-nom-nom-nom-nom. Good. Really good. Oishii. Ono too da’ max!

Although the crust was thin, it still had enough rigidity to hold up without limping over too much. It also remained crunchy and not soggy at all.

The balance of their tasty sauce, thinly-sliced pepperoni and mozzarella cheese was just right. While I have to admit, even though I had mostly mushroom “crumbs”, they still held up their flavor enough to warrant the extra $1.75 toppings charge.

I LOVE Pizza Hut pizza. While it still can’t topple the reigning Oahu Pizza Champ (in my book), which is North Shore Farm’s Pesto Neapolitan Pizza, for what it’s worth (FWIW), Pizza Hut’s “Big Eat Pizza” carryout 12″ medium pan pie for just $5 is definitely one of the best deals in town.

Pomai, when I was in Beijing I had to try their Pizza Hut pizza and it was aweful. It was bland and tasteless. Toppings was very little for the same pizza you would get in states which in Hawaii more of it.

Now I know states have it better.

I love anchovies on my pizza, so maybe starting 15~20 years ago the only place could easiy get it was at Mama Mia’s at Puck’s Alley and a place on Kaphulu Ave. But you could take a can of anchovies to Pizza Hut and they would put it on the pizza you order. Don’t know if they will still do it. So nowadays I go for the spinach/garlic/mushroom/anchovy pizza at Boston’s North End.

Nate, OK, if you like Anchovies on Pizza, how about one Hum Nyee and pork hash Pizza? Hah? How you figgah? You never know, might be really ono!

Michael, perhaps the Beijing Pizza Hut might wanna’ consider offering the suggestion I just gave to Nate! While at the same time, in exchange of ‘California Pizza Kitchen’, we could have ‘Chinese Pizza Kitchen’, a.k.a. C.P.K., or better yet, C-PaKe. lol

Pomai, I went to Beijing a few years ago and what Michael wrote is true of their Pizza Hut pizzas but I did try their KFC Fried Chicken at World Trade Center in Beijing and it not salty but season just right. Go figure that. Only thing was their chicken were small and very little meat on it. A bucket of KFC Chickens there you end up with half a bucket. Small Chicken that why while in states same amount would up to bucket bigger chickens.

I like Pizza Hut but has a nice pizza in San Francisco it was Pesto Pizza . Now I try look for it where there pizza in restaurants.

Amy, you sure Beijing’s KFC Fried Chicken was indeed CHICKEN? lol

I don’t recall seeing or hearing about a Pesto Pizza at the Pizza Huts in Hawaii. I’ll have to look into that. I LOVE pizza with Pesto Sauce!

Wow, so far in the ‘Big Three Poll’ it’s a heated battle between Pizza Hut (22 votes) and Papa John’s (23 votes) for the win!

Not surprisingly, 12 votes came in saying ‘None of the Above’. Which has me wondering where else you folks who voted that prefer! ???
