Maebo's One-Ton Chip Cookies

Remember that old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup TV commercial where one kid’s walking down the street eating chocolate, and the other kid’s walking from the opposite direction eating peanut butter, and they collide into each other, discovering by accident how good the two foods taste together?

If not, here it is…

Well, the same thing must have happened at the Maebo Factory or somewhere in Hilo, as we have here these One-Ton Chip Cookies.

And just like it seems sensible and natural to combine peanut butter with chocolate, if you’re familiar with both products, the combination of a buttery rich and sweet, crispy shortbread cookie along with super-crunchy-crispy, slightly salty, slightly sweet and robust crushed One-Ton Chips sounds like it should work…

Let’s have a look at one of these One-Ton Chip Cookies…

You can easily see the broken-up pieces of One-Ton Chips mixed into the shortbread cookie dough.

Let’s look underneath the cookie to see if there’s more visible pieces of One-Ton Chips…

There’s a couple pieces visible there as well.

You can see in these broken pieces of One-Ton Chip Cookies the pieces of One-Top Chips generously mixed within…

What’s smart about this from the factory’s point of view is that they can make use of defective and/or broken product.

So how is it? ONO! Although the flavor leans more towards being that of a very tasty Shortbread Cookie than of an equally-flavored One-Ton Chip and Cookie hybrid.

If anything, due to the fact that the the slightly salty, sweet and robust One-Ton Chips are more crispy-hard than the more delicate shortbread cookie, they almost seem like nuts or toffee when biting into it… which is a good thing!

Come to think of it, they kinda’ remind me of Mikey’s Favorites Shortbread Cornflakes Cookies

Mikey’s Favorites Golden Flakes (Shortbread Cornflakes) Cookies

But while I was hoping it would, it doesn’t really scream One-Ton Chips, especially if you’re familiar how this popular Hawaii snack chips tastes in and of itself.

Overall though, this is one fantastic shortbread cookie, with an interesting twist thanks to the addition of Maebo’s famous One-Ton Chips. It’s actually very addicting; enough where I had a difficult time stopping myself from eating the entire snack-sized bag in one sitting. STOP! lol

With that, I give Maebo’s One-Ton Chip Cookies a solid 4-SPAM Musubi.

Big Shaka to: Great idea! The One-Ton Chips marry very well with the Shortbread Cookie. Very crispy cookie. The more-crispy One-Ton Chips have a nut and/or toffee-like quality to it when mixed with the buttery-sweet Shortbread Cookie.
No Shaka to: The flavor of One-Ton Chips itself isn’t as pronounced as I had hoped.
The Tasty Island rating: 4 SPAM Musubi

  1. Pomai, I try it with deep fried noodle crushed in dough and not bad also and added chocolate chips and other coconut too. It in web cornflake cookie recipe. This recipe been around a long time. Try adding cereal to pancake batter for a texture pancake too.

  2. haha! That’s Robby Benson and Don Most (Ralph Malph of Happy Days) in the commercial. (OMG, did I just date myself??) I love shortbread cookies and 1-ton chips so this is right up my alley!

  3. This is one of the reasons I’m glad to no longer be living in Hawaii … If I still lived there, I would be buying and eating One-Ton Chips on a daily basis and now, with them baked into cookies, who know what muumuu size I’d be expanding into after a few weeks? :)

  4. Jenny, good point. I think if your muu’muu size gets really big, you’ll have to go from being named ‘Jenny’ to us calling you ‘Tutu’. lol

Shortbread cookies are all the rage here in the islands now, with new companies popping up all over the place featuring a variety of flavors influenced by the islands. You’ve got Big Island Candies amazing Chocolate-dipped Shortbread Cookies. Then there’s Honolulu Cookie Company’s Pineapple-shaped chocolate-dipped SB cookies. Along with quite a few more local brands specializing in SB cookies.

CAB, how’s Robby Benson’s heavy New York accent…”mmm, peanut buttah”. lol!

Kelike, wow, crushed, deep-fried noodles in cookie dough, eh? Sounds interesting! They should come with some kind of noodle-based sweet snack. Like deep-fried chow funn noodles dipped in chocolate or Honey. How you figgah?

Spotty, you mentioning that reminded me that Maebo’s One-Ton Chip Cookies are indeed a little similar in texture and flavor to Mikey’s Golden Flakes cornflake shortbread cookies, hence I added that to the post.

    :-)

  5. WOW!!! I have got to try these. My obachan (great grandmother) started the maebo noodle factory and invented the one ton chip! I am so glad to see that they have expanded the product line to include cookies! What a revelation. I spent quite a few days at the noodle factory throwing around cornstarch and flour with my cousins. I don’t see much of that side of the family anymore becuase I currently live in montana but its nice to know that the product is still out there and still so beloved! I gotta call my mom and tell her to send me some~
